Curriculum Focus

Our Montessori elementary curriculum integrates Language, Math, Science, Social Studies, Geography, Spanish, Technology, Music, Art, Physical Education, and Research. Students move from concrete Montessori materials to abstract understanding while developing accountability, time management, and self-evaluation skills.

Daily Routine

Elementary days unfold with individualized work plans that help students make appropriate choices about their time. Long work periods allow deep concentration. Outdoor classroom space, field trips, and classroom visitors support hands-on learning across subjects.

Classroom Experience

Lower Elementary (1st through 3rd grade) and Upper Elementary (4th through 6th grade) classrooms celebrate our multicultural community. Mixed-age groupings let younger students learn from older classmates while older children develop leadership through mentoring.

About Our Montessori Elementary Program

Will my child stay engaged as academics get harder? Can they handle more independence? These questions matter deeply, and we understand. The elementary years bring incredible cognitive leaps. Maria Montessori called this the second plane of development, when children develop reasoning minds and social consciousness. Our Montessori classroom transforms this natural curiosity into meaningful work. Students choose projects that challenge them, collaborate with peers across different ages, and build confidence through authentic accomplishment. As Dr. Maria Montessori observed, "An education capable of saving humanity is no small undertaking: it involves the spiritual development of man, the enhancement of his value as an individual, and the preparation of young people to understand the times in which they live." This approach prepares children not just for middle school, but for a lifetime of purposeful learning.

From Ages 6 to 12: Development Support for Every Stage

The elementary years bring such growth. Six-year-olds still love concrete materials and hands-on discovery. By twelve, they reason abstractly and seek deeper understanding of their world. Research shows that when elementary students have meaningful choices in real-world projects, they feel more capable, engaged, and confident as learners, strengthening both their interest and sense of identity. Our Montessori elementary program meets students exactly where they develop, supporting each child's journey at their own pace. Whether your child enters first grade or joins us later, they find a community that values their unique path.

Cosmic Education and the Great Lessons

Cosmic education forms the heart of our Montessori elementary curriculum. Through the Great Lessons, students discover how everything connects. They explore the formation of the universe, the timeline of life on Earth, and the story of human development. These narratives spark questions that lead to independent research across Science, History, Geography, and Language. Children learn they belong to something larger than themselves.

Language Development and Communication Skills

Language work in our elementary program goes far beyond grammar drills. Students write stories, essays, poems, and research papers that express their thinking. They study sentence structure and style while developing their own voice. Research skills grow as children learn to use reference materials, conduct interviews, and present findings. Studies have found that the Montessori curriculum shows high success rates in literacy development compared to conventional learning methods. These experiences build the foundation for clear communication and intellectual independence.

Mathematical Thinking and Problem Solving

Math comes alive through beautiful Montessori materials that make abstract concepts tangible. Students explore fractions with colorful insets, understand geometry through hands-on manipulation, and build number sense that supports advanced operations. This concrete foundation helps children develop true mathematical understanding rather than memorizing procedures. According to research, the Montessori approach shows significant impact on early childhood mathematics development. They learn to think logically and solve problems creatively.

Scientific Exploration and Discovery

Our elementary students conduct experiments, build models, and investigate questions that matter to them. Whether examining microscope slides, studying atomic structures, or exploring the natural world outside, children engage directly with scientific concepts. This hands-on approach nurtures critical thinking and teaches the scientific method through authentic discovery.

Cultural Studies and Global Awareness

Geography, History, and Cultural Studies help students understand their place in a diverse world. Puzzle maps, timeline work, and research projects connect children to different cultures, historical periods, and global perspectives. Our multicultural community enriches these lessons daily, as students learn from each other's backgrounds and experiences. By centering children's lived experiences and developmental trajectories, Maria Montessori offers a framework for understanding human cognition, ethical agency, and social transformation.

Social Development and Community Building

The mixed-age Montessori classroom creates a natural community where younger students gain confidence by observing older classmates, and older children strengthen understanding by mentoring peers. Research shows that children who learn in mixed-age classrooms tend to show more kindness and cooperation, and less aggressive or isolating behavior. Those social benefits persist even years later when children move into traditional same-age classes. Students practice conflict resolution, active listening, and respectful communication that serves them throughout life.

Independence and Personal Responsibility

Individualized work plans teach students to manage time effectively and make appropriate choices about their learning. They evaluate their own progress, identify areas of growth, and take ownership of their education. This growing independence prepares children for the increased responsibility of middle school and beyond. According to the American Montessori Society, concentration, confidence, collaboration, and independence from an early age result in long-term positive outcomes on students' success.

Enrichment and Specialized Learning

Beyond core academics, students participate in Spanish, Technology, Music, Art, and Physical Education. Our digital citizenship program for elementary students prepares children to engage responsibly with technology. These enrichment opportunities let students explore interests, develop new skills, and express themselves in meaningful ways.

Outdoor Learning and Field Experiences

Our outdoor classroom space extends learning beyond four walls. Planned field trips connect to areas of study, making abstract concepts real and memorable. Visitors to our classroom bring expertise and diverse perspectives that enrich understanding. These experiences help students see how classroom learning applies to the wider world.

Brain Development and Learning Outcomes

The elementary years represent a critical period for cognitive development. Studies have shown that students who attended Montessori schools display brain activity that appears more connected and stable than that of students in traditional schools. This deeper neural integration supports better learning outcomes across all subjects. A comprehensive meta-analysis finds positive results for cognitive, creative, social, and motor skills as well as academic achievement in Montessori education.

AMIS is a wonderful school. I had heard about Montessori Schools online and thankfully found one close to our home. The first thing I noticed was how welcoming the community was. The Class leads, head of school and everyone were always available, happy and most importantly friendly. We noticed a great difference in our daughter after a few months. She was more articulate and expressed interest in doing chores around the house. She would make our beds, ask to do dishes and clean up after herself. There were many activities she engaged in at school - flower making, arts and crafts and for international day she learnt about Indian culture. I like the fact that AMIS has snacks available for the kids as well as Fruit daily. I will suggest the school works on the cleanliness of the potty - I suggested the use of the class leads helping little children set up disposable seat liners when they have to go especially for the girls. My daughter caught molluscum contagious while at AMIS. The nap time cots and liners hygiene could also be improved. I suggest having each child purchase their own liner with a name tag when they join the school which they can take home each week with heir blankets to wash and return. Overall I would recommend the school to others. It is a good school.
